Authentic Minnesota Log Cabins

An Authentic Minnesota-Winter Log Cabin Experience

WOW! I am so sad to have left Grand Superior Lodge. This place is so special. I have fallen in love with the property, the log cabin I stayed in, the amenities and location. I had such a wonderful weekend there! @jonkreye

The Log Cabins at Grand Superior are an authentic throwback to a bygone era. But they aren’t your grandpa’s cabins.

Modern amenities meld with classic log construction for a perfect North Shore vacation destination. All without having to worry about shoveling or splitting firewood to keep warm. We’ll do the work. You enjoy the cabin.

Recipe for a Winter Log Cabin Experience

Ingredients

Step 1 (Book it!)

Coordinate schedules with your loved one(s) and book your Studio, One-Bedroom, or Two-Bedroom Cabin. 3-4 nights is the ideal length, but a 2-night getaway will work in a pinch.

Step 2 (Pre-Arrival)

Be sure to pack plenty of layers weather on the north shore can be unpredictable.

Load up the cooler. We’ve got full kitchens in our cabins, so you will get the chance to bond over the preparation of your favorite meals.

Recommended stops on the way to Grand Superior include Ursa Minor Brewing in Duluth,  Russ Kendall’s Smokehouse in Knife River, Spokengear in Two Harbors (if you want to rent a Fat Bike – Great winter fun!).

Step 3 (Arrival Day)

Check-in in our Grand log lodge, and unload your gear in your cabin. Whew. It’s been a long day. Save the cooking for tomorrow, and head into our on-site restaurant to unwind with a local craft beer or glass of wine and share some of our delicious apps. Still hungry? You’ll love our entrée selections. The Cedar Planked Salmon is our favorite.

Step 4 Days 2-4 (Mix and Match)

Sleep in. Relax in front of the fire. Play in the snow. Check out our free snowshoes and go for a hike. Read a good book. Explore frozen waterfalls at Gooseberry Falls State Park (just 2-miles north). Take a fat bike ride through the Lake County Demonstration Forest. Play a game of cribbage. Take a dip in the pool.

If you brought your sled you can hit the incredible North Shore State Trail.

Definitely treat yourself to a massage.

Step 5 (Departure)

You’re going to have so much fun, that you’re going to want to book your next vacation before you leave. Just swing into the front desk, and we’ll help you find the perfect dates for your next North Shore experience.

Pro-tip: Add an extra day next time.

What our Log Cabin Guests have to say

Our cabins are awesome, but you don't have to take our word for it

Everything about our stay was fantastic. We were provided with everything we needed and really felt like guests, not just customers. This stay was a great reminder of why I need to keep coming back more often. – Mike C.

Service was wonderful. All staff very friendly and helpful. – Sandra B.

This was the first time we had our ENTIRE family with us and it was amazing.  As long as the dog-friendly accommodations are available at Grand Superior, we will definitely come back. – Lena J.

Hit the Trails

The North Shore of Lake Superior is home to some of Minnesota’s most robust and beautiful trail systems. You could take a Grand Superior vacation twice a year for the rest of your life and not experience them all. We recommend you do that anyway. You’ll be glad you did.

Here are a few of our favorite ways to experience winter on the North Shore.

Cross Country Skiing is huge this year!

Not only are the trail conditions superb, but we’re finding more and more guests are curious about the experience. For many, their first time on cross country skis is on the north shore. Don’t worry about owning your own gear – rentals are available from our neighbors at j gregors.

Winter Fun in Two Harbors

The North Shore is the Destination for Superior Winter Recreation

Look no further than Grand Superior Lodge for your authentic North Shore ‘Winter Wonderland’ adventure.

Don’t let the cold and snow put a damper on your outdoor fun. Here at Grand Superior Lodge, we offer a variety of recreational options. Guests can also take advantage of our exclusive partnerships with many nearby retailers and outfitters to rent equipment or hire an experienced guide.

We’ve rounded up a few of our favorites below.

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is a simple activity the whole family can enjoy right outside the front door at Grand Superior Lodge. Strap on some shoes and float across the powder. Take in the splendor of the season undisturbed.

Recommended Hikes

  • Gooseberry Falls State Park – candlelight ski!
  • Superior Hiking Trail – wolf rock
  • Split Rock Lighthouse Loop
  • Tettegouche State Park – high falls
  • Carlton Peak from Britton Peak parking lot
  • Oberg Mountain loop – what a view of Lake Superior!
  • Any place with snow is a good spot!

Fat Tire Biking

When temperatures drop, your biking doesn’t have to stop. Forging through the snowy terrain on a fat tire bike is a fun way to see the best of the winter season while getting in a full body workout.

Where to ride:

  • Split Rock Lighthouse State Park: 8.7 miles of trails to be groomed for fat biking. Download map
  • Around the town of Two Harbors – stole along the lake and then stop in at Castle Danger for a local brew.
  • Check out Spokengear – test ride your next fatty! You can even rent an Electric Fat Bike to cruse the trail in style. You might as well ask them where the best-groomed trails are because they’re the experts in these neck of the woods.

Dog-sledding

Dash to the North Shore for a dog-sledding adventure. This popular tradition is kept alive by a handful of kennels and highlighted by the Annual John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon in late January.

For more information about our dog sled tours see our partner, Positive Energy Outdoors’ website. Or call Silver Creek Dog Sleds at 218.834.6592.

Skijoring

This winter sport is a must for dog lovers. Skijoring is a fast-growing winter activity that combines cross-country skiing and dogsledding. Originating in Scandinavia and literally meaning “ski-driving” in Norwegian, skijoring allows a dog and owner to exercise and travel together while enjoying the outdoors. Some special equipment is needed to get started but if you already have XC skies than all you need is the harness setup! After a full day of fresh air, you’ll be excited to retreat back to your cabin at Grand Superior Lodge and cuddle up with your pooch next to the fire.

Dogs are Welcome at Grand Superior LodgePlease call and let us know ahead of time.

There are many quality spots to drop a line while staying at Grand Superior Lodge. Lake Superior and the other nearby bodies of water inland offer something for anglers of all ages and skill levels. If ice fishing isn’t your thing take 15 steps from your cabin at Grand Superior Lodge to cast a line in for your luck at a Coho Salmon.
